The collision occurred at about 6:50 p.m. Hawaii time on state Highway 30 just south of Kekaa Drive in Kaanapali, an unincorporated community on Maui.
Police said a white 2003 Dodge pickup truck was traveling south on Highway 30 when it crossed a painted median and hit a white four-door 2007 Toyota Camry traveling north on the highway.
The Camry then hit a black 2014 Dodge pickup truck also traveling north on the highway.
Then a tan 2015 Toyota Sienna hit the back end of the Camry.
Four people died in the serious of collisions.
San Mateo man Charles Whipple, 36, was a passenger in the rear seat of the Camry. He died along with 36-year-old Danille McColloch of Galt, who was also in the Camry.
The driver of the 2003 Dodge pickup truck, Raymundo Hernandez-Ramirez, 52, of Lahaina, an unincorporated community in Maui County, Hawaii, also died.
A woman in the Camry from San Mateo was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
Another passenger in the Camry, a 38-year-old man from Galt was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.
The driver of the Camry also died. His name is not being released until his family is told.
The driver of the 2014 Dodge pickup truck was not injured. Only one of four people in the Toyota Sienna suffered injuries and those injuries were minor.
Police said they believe speed played a part in the collision and they are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
