(BayAreaNewsTalk.com) – Police have released images of the vehicle that struck and critically injured a 3-year-old boy Wednesday morning in Richmond before fleeing the scene.

The vehicle is described as a red Smart car with a black roof and a black stripe on the doors. Police said the vehicle sustained damage to the front bumper area.

According to Richmond police spokesman Lt. Felix Tan, officers responded to a report of the hit-and-run collision in the 2700 block of Macdonald Avenue around 11:30 a.m.

Police learned that the boy’s mother was trying to put him into their vehicle when he escaped and darted into the street. The suspect vehicle struck him and then fled the scene, Tan said.

The boy was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and is in critical, but stable condition, Tan said.

Anyone with information about this collision is asked to call police at (510) 233-1214.
