Police are investigating an incident reported early Monday morning in which a group of teenage boys may have lit a gas can on fire on a residential street in Mill Valley as an attempted arson.

The incident was reported at 3:13 a.m. when residents in the vicinity of Alta Vista and Mesa avenues called in three older teenage boys who appeared to light some flammable materials near a gas can in the roadway before fleeing on foot toward East Blithedale Avenue.

Arriving officers found a gas can and a burn mark in the roadway, but there was no additional damage.

Police say the intent and intended target in this incident are not currently known. They’re asking anyone with additional information to call investigators at 415-389-4100.
