(BANT) – San Mateo County sheriff’s officials say a mountain lion snatched a dog from off of its owner’s bed early this morning at a home in Pescadero.

It happened around 3 a.m. Officials say the 15-pound Portuguese Podengo was at the end its owners bed in a home on Native Sons Road when it began barking.

The barking woke up a woman in the home who was sleeping with a child in the bedroom with its French doors open so the dog could get out.

The woman looked up and saw the shadow of an animal that snatched the dog its mouth and walked out. When the woman turned on a flashlight to look for the dog, she saw wet paw prints at the entrance to the bedroom and called 911.

Deputies went to the home and saw paw prints that they believe are from a mountain lion. Sheriff’s officials have been in touch with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for any necessary follow-up investigation.
