Vacaville police said today that a 20-year-old man who went missing in 1991 has recently been identified via updated fingerprint techniques as a cold case death that was reported in the Sacramento Delta area weeks after he went missing.

Charles Campbell was reported missing by his mother in September 1991 after last being seen in Oakley a week earlier by a friend, police wrote in a Facebook post today.

Detectives worked with Campbell’s mother over the next several years to follow up on many leads in the case but he was never located.

However, early this month, Vacaville police got a call from a Sacramento County sheriff’s investigator who said their department had been working on a cold case death, also back in 1991, in which a young man had been found dead, police said.

The cause of death was unclear but the county coroner’s office had determined he was not the victim of a homicide, according to police.

Using the updated fingerprint techniques, investigators were able to identify the body as that of Campbell.

Vacaville detectives met with Campbell’s family recently to make the notification and said “they were both relieved and saddened to learn Charles did in fact die many years ago.”
