(BANT) – A 31-year-old man was fatally struck by a car while refueling his own vehicle on the side of the road Tuesday night in Hayward, according to police.

The crash occurred around 8:30 p.m. on westbound Tennyson Road just west of Interstate Highway 880.

The man, who was driving a 2012 Honda Accord, pulled over on the shoulder.

He turned on his hazard lights, got out of the vehicle and was putting additional gas in his tank using a portable container of some kind when both the man and his vehicle were struck by a 2010 Honda Accord, driven
by a 23-year-old woman from San Ramon.

She failed to see the man and vehicle before the crash but remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, according to police.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He’s been identified only as a Fremont resident.

Police do not yet know whether alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact investigators at (510) 293-7149.
