(BayAreaNewsTalk.com) – Milpitas police have identified a man who was arrested for causing a standoff at a Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that stretched from Monday evening into early Tuesday morning.
Members of the Milpitas police SWAT team took James Trelles Martinez, 50, of Cupertino, into custody after they broke into the bathroom at 73 S. Main St. around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday, police said.
Martinez was arrested on suspicion of vandalism, trespassing, resisting arrest, possessing a controlled substance and being under the influence of a controlled substance. Police discovered Martinez had severely damaged the bathroom fixtures in the restaurant.
The standoff started at 6:53 p.m. Monday when police responded to the KFC on reports that Martinez was banging on the walls and screaming.
When officers arrived, they heard a sound similar to a gunshot come from the restroom. The restaurant was then evacuated and negotiators brought in to speak to Martinez. Milpitas police used resources from the San Jose and Fremont police departments to help in the standoff.
Martinez has been booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail.
