(BayAreaNewsTalk.com) – Firefighters rescued a person from a car that went into a canal Friday morning in Antioch, a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman said today.

The driver of the vehicle called the fire district at 7:58 a.m. because he couldn’t get out of a car, which was partially submerged in the Contra Costa Canal near Hillcrest Avenue and Wild Horse Road.

Fire spokesman Capt. George Laing said the driver reported that the vehicle was sinking. When firefighters arrived, the car was not sinking and the driver appeared to be safe.

Laing said firefighters gave the driver a life jacket and helped him out of the car. He made it out of the canal by 8:12 a.m. and a tow truck pulled the vehicle from the canal by 9:12 a.m.

Laing said the victim did not need to go to a hospital.
